Is he MAD GENIUS or VISIONARY PROPHET?
Nam June Paik is basically the godfather of video art, starting way back in the 1960s. His stuff often feels like he had a crystal ball – like, he predicted the future. Back in 1968, he even wrote about a world where everyone would ditch paper for screens. One of his cool installations, “Hacker/Newbie,” shows these robot things that look like mobile phone screens taking over busted TVs. People say it’s like he knew we’d all be glued to our little phone screens instead of big TVs in the future. So, I aim to present Nam June Paik as a visionary artist who foresaw the future, drawing connections between “Hacker/Newbie” and his prophetic insights.
